Thanksgiving Week

To be honest a lot of the news circulating around Michelle Obama is the same it was last week, and the week before..
Michelle is still trying to figure out what type of first-lady she will be. Her new job, which really isn't a job considering she doesn't get paid and isn't appointed or elected, has no job description. But it looks like Michelle is going to jump into the political ring and make sure her voice is heard.

The day before Thanksgiving the Obama family was out in a Chicago neighborhood giving food to the needy. Apparently Michelle was warmly dressed in a beanie, winter jacket and gloves. Not very stylish, but extremely resourceful.

On Thanksgiving Michelle and Barack had several family friends over and did some Christmas shopping.

Future First Lady Moment of the Week:

This time Barack is going big. Apparently Michelle is going to get a £20,000 ring for her support during the election. "The Harmony ring is made of rhodium - the world's most expensive metal --and encrusted with diamonds. It is being hastily made by Italian designer Giovanni Bosco in time for January's inauguration ceremony."

First of all, what does that translate into in U.S. dollars? I'm entertained by the fact that a trendy London gossip site is reporting on the incoming First Lady's new flashy bracelet. Very credible source! But really, I find it a little demeaning that you even included such a fact in your post when Michelle Obama is about to become one of the most important and most watched female figures in America. Having just read the Newsweek cover story on Mrs. Obama, I am evermore aware of Michelle's wild ride on the campaign trail and the fact that her journey is just getting started.

I admire that the Obama's are such a loving and devoted couple, but I hope that they would stick to their proclaimed values as modest Americans--especially in these tough economic times. That wouldn't include rare metal and loads of diamonds (particularly not after Barack's recent 60 Minutes interview in which he nostalgically allueded to his tiny old D.C. apartment). Right now Americans need respectable role models to look up to if we're going to be asked to tighten our belts.

I suppose it all comes down to salacious blather versus real substance about the wife and mother about to move in to the White House. What do people want to hear? Has it all come down to a money game?

In response to the comment as to "what type of first lady" she will be, I am also curious. Will she step into the role similar to that of Nancy Reagan and be a social activist, a figurehead similar to Jackie Kennedy Onassus, a future politician such as Hillary Clinton, or just a woman who happened to marry the president like Julia Grant (who's second biggest claim to fame is being stalked by John Wilkes Boothe the night he assasinated President Lincoln). In my opinion she will attempt to make a strong impact because she seems to encompass that sort of personality.

In response to the question of what kind of first lady Michelle Obama will be, I believe that she will be active in influencing and advising Barack Obama however she can. Michelle took time off of work to help her husband on the campaign trail and she did make an impact which can be seen by some of the crowds she drew and the attention that she was given. I think she will continue on helping him into his presidency rather than returning to her career. Although she may end up being an involved and active first lady, I do not see politics in her future.

Jesse--love the Julia Grant reference, but where did you get the Booth reference on the same night he assassinated Lincoln? When did he have the time?

In defense of Henry's post, I think that Kees, Henry and I understand the gravity surrounding Michelle's role in what will probably become one of the most active presidencies since 1932. Michelle will have to choose between a multitude of different approaches as to what her defined role will be in the White House. But I don't find it "demeaning" that the Rhodium ring article (which has now been proved false)was included as the whole "Future First Lady Moment of the Week" has always been about finding the most attention-grabbing, fun article on Michelle Obama and previously Cindy McCain. If anything, the fact that the AP has proved the article false just shows how closely citizens are monitoring the President in "tough economic times."
